I recall the Lego universal joint I had as a kid. It was cool and mystifying, and somehow not Lego-like as Lego had its grid and orientation all set up already. What, you wanna change the rules and make anything go anywhere?

The universal joint does not change the direction from vertical to horizontal. That is done by the gear set. The universal joint allows for minor shaft misalignment.
